2022 Porsche Taycan Fuel

Home
Porsche's first EV is the Taycan, a sporty luxury electric sedan. The Taycan has been one of our favourite cars on the road, electric or otherwise, since its debut. We're impressed by the Porsche's ability to be a comfortable daily driver while also delivering supercar-like performance at the touch of a button. When it comes to range, the EPA estimates that the base-model Taycan can travel approximately 200 miles, while the larger-battery model can travel approximately 227 miles.

The most efficient Taycan has a combined fuel economy of up to 79 MPGe. The Tesla Model S Long Range, on the other hand, is rated at 120 MPGe. The Porsche is rated at up to 84 MPGe on the highway, while the Tesla is rated at up to 115 MPGe. On our 75-mph highway route, we tested the Taycan 4S with the large battery and got 65 MPGe. We ran the same test with a 2018 Model S 100D and got 91 MPGe. On our aforementioned highway test, a 2020 Taycan 4S achieved 180 miles of real-world range.

The Taycan's driving range pales in comparison to that of the Tesla Model S, which can travel 400 miles on a single charge. The Porsche has a range of 199 to 227 miles depending on battery size and electric motors. Every model has an 800-volt architecture with a maximum charging rate of 270 kilowatts.

Models with the larger battery—Porsche claims 93.4 kWh, but only 83.7 kWh are usable—can be charged from 0 to 80% in a claimed 23 minutes. However, 800-volt DC fast chargers are uncommon, and peak charging rates aren't very useful, as we discovered in a comparison test. According to Porsche, charging at a 50-kW DC fast charger takes 93 minutes. While 270-kW and 50-kW fast charging are standard, 150-kW charging is available as an option. During our 11-car, thousand-mile EV1000 rally, we encountered real-world charging variables.
