2021 Land Rover Discovery Engine

Home
For 2021, two new engines are available. The base engine in the Discovery is a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. There is a 355-horsepower six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system available. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly. The base engine isn't as powerful as last year's, but it's still plenty powerful. Choose a six-cylinder engine for faster acceleration. It outperforms both of the previous offerings.

All Discovery models come standard with full-time all-wheel drive, but buyers can opt for a 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system. We haven't had the opportunity to test drive the Disco with the base turbo four, but with the inline-six, the big Land Rover feels nimble around town and has enough power for highway merging and passing. The six-cylinder Discovery reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds on our test track. The Land Rover's adventure-ready mission appeals to those looking for an SUV for more than just cruising the mall parking lot, but it comes at the expense of on-road dexterity.

The Discovery's handling isn't as ponderous as one might expect, but changing direction feels clumsy and top-heavy. The Disco never lets you forget you're driving a big SUV. The overall ride quality is quite good, and even harsh bumps are easily handled. However, steering feel is non-existent, particularly on-center, where a large dead spot necessitates frequent steering corrections while cruising on the highway. If towing a heavy load is on the agenda, the Disco has a towing capacity of 8200 pounds.

The on-road performance of this Land Rover is highlighted by well-weighted steering and a smooth ride over road bumps. However, there is still more body lean than in some competitors.

2021 Land Rover Discovery Off-Road Performance

The Discovery excels at venturing off the beaten path, and all models include off-road features such as four-wheel drive and hill descent control. Terrain Progress Control, Terrain Response 2, Advanced Tow Assist, and a tow hitch receiver are available as options in the top trim.
