The EPA estimates that the turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder model with front-wheel drive will have the best fuel economy among nonhybrid Escape models. It gets 27 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined; add all-wheel drive and those numbers drop to 26 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined. During our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, we tested an all-wheel-drive model with the turbo three-cylinder and achieved an impressive 35 mpg.

Despite the fact that the larger turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with all-wheel drive is rated for 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined, we achieved 32 mpg highway in our testing. For those looking for the most efficient Escape, look no further than the plug-in hybrid model, which has a city fuel economy rating of up to 44 mpg.
