Land Rover is preparing the junior Defender 80, a smaller and more affordable entry point into its most adventurous SUV line, to complement the recently redesigned Defender mid-size SUV. The Defender 80, on the other hand, is unlikely to be based on a scaled-down version of the larger Defender platform.

Instead, it will most likely be based on the Harrier, a small SUV sold by Jaguar-Land Rover's parent company, Tata. Why is it called 80? The name is speculative, but it makes sense given that the larger Defender is available in two-door 90 and four-door 110 trims. We anticipate a starting price of around $30,000, allowing the base model to compete with the upcoming Ford Bronco and the current Jeep Wrangler. The SE and HSE trim levels could compete with luxury subcompact SUVs like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Volvo XC40.

The Land Rover Defender 80 will, in essence, be built on a completely different foundation than the standard Defender. The new SUV, according to the latest reports, will be based on the Harrier, a compact SUV marketed by Jaguar's parent company Tata. The starting price is expected to be around $30,000, which is comparable to the current Jeep Wrangler and the new Ford Bronco.
