When the 2023 Kia Sportage hits showrooms early next year, it will usher in a new generation. Among the changes from its predecessor are new hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains. With the latter addition, the Kia now competes with plug-in alternatives like the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 Prime, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

2023 Kia Sportage Engine

The Kia Sportage's standard engine is a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid model combines a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a single electric motor to produce a total of 226 horsepower. Either powertrain can be combined with either front- or all-wheel drive. There's also an all-wheel-drive-only plug-in hybrid, which uses the same engine as the regular hybrid but has a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery pack. Kia claims that the PHEV model can travel 32 miles solely on electricity.

The Kia Sportage is built on a new platform with a longer wheelbase, which is said to improve driving dynamics while also reducing noise and vibration. The introduction of rugged-looking trims like the X-Line gives the compact ute an off-road vibe, but the X-Pro actually has some off-road equipment. It has a selection of drive modes and rides on black 17-inch rims with all-terrain tyres.
