2022 Ford Explorer Engine

The Ford Explorer comes with a choice of two engines. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Most customers should be satisfied with this engine. It provides strong passing power and allows this vehicle to accelerate quickly.

A twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 is available for more power. This engine produces 400 hp and 415 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly but can be slow to shift when more power is required.

The Ford Explorer's base, XLT, and Limited trims are powered by a 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that propels the vehicle with authority. The King Ranch, Platinum, and ST models, which are powered by a 400-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, will appeal to the more aggressive drivers among us. In 2020, a hybrid model was added to the Explorer lineup. It combines a 3.3-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor to produce 318 horsepower. The Explorer can tow up to 5600 pounds when properly equipped.

The Ford  Explorer is built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, but all-wheel drive is still available as an option. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models. The ride and handling are pleasant and composed, but not particularly entertaining; the Explorer ST is far more athletic, with more power and a stiffer suspension making it a true performance SUV.
