2022 Range Rover Velar Engine

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is an excellent off-roader with a first-rate cabin, but the ride isn't as comfortable as you might expect. Because of insufficient safety and reliability data, the Velar does not have an overall score or a class ranking.

2022 Range Rover Velar

2022 Range Rover Velar Engine

The Range Rover Velar is equipped with a 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine as standard, with the option of upgrading to 340- or 395-horsepower six-cylinders. Each of these engines is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with smooth shifts.

The base engine provides adequate acceleration from a stop as well as when passing other vehicles at higher speeds. The optional six-cylinder engines provide faster acceleration and a more satisfying driving experience.

2022 Range Rover Velar Gas Mileage

With its turbo-four engine, the Range Rover Velar achieves respectable fuel economy for the luxury midsize SUV class, with ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Ratings for six-cylinder models are not yet available, but the comparable 2021 Velar gets 20/26 mpg city/highway with the 340-horsepower engine and 19/25 mpg with the 395-horsepower engine. The 2022 model is expected to have nearly identical ratings.

2022 Range Rover Velar Ride and Handling

While it isn't the most athletic vehicle in the class, the Range Rover Velar has athletic handling and can confidently take corners. The ride is generally comfortable, but some may find it a little firm.

2022 Range Rover Velar Off-Road Performance

The Range Rover Velar isn't the most capable off-roader on the market, but it's still a Land Rover, so it can hold its own when the road ends. The Terrain Response system combines standard four-wheel drive and hill descent control with selectable drive modes: Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Sand, and Mud and Ruts.

Terrain Response 2 is an upgrade that automatically selects the appropriate mode based on driving conditions. A locking rear differential, as well as upgraded Terrain Progress Control is also available as an option.

2022 Range Rover Velar Towing Capacity

The Range Rover Velar can tow up to 5,511 pounds when properly equipped.
