2022 Kia Forte Engine

The Kia Forte has a large cargo hold and seating for five people, but it is not a crossover. The four-door sedan competes with other sedans that have survived the SUV onslaught; it is aimed at vehicles such as the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla.

2022 Kia Forte Engine

The Kia Forte is powered by two engines: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 201 horsepower. When we tested it, the 2.0-liter engine felt sluggish, and the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) didn't help. The Forte's non-turbocharged engine took 8.2 seconds to propel it from zero to 60 mph on our test track, which was significantly slower than the Mazda 3, which took 7.0 seconds.

The optional 201-hp turbocharged engine, on the other hand, puts the Forte GT on par with the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Civic Si—at least in theory. A manual transmission-equipped GT test car managed a 6.7-second run to 60 mph on our test track, putting it slightly behind those two memorable performers. Even in the sportier GT model, the Forte provides a comfortable and stable ride, but its handling isn't as exciting as its Stinger-inspired exterior styling would suggest. In fact, when hustling the Forte against the Civic Si and the Jetta GLI in a recent comparison test, we found ourselves working harder in the Forte to keep up with the rest of the pack.
