2022 Ford Edge Engine

The 2022 Ford Edge is a five-seat crossover SUV with on-road driving in the foreground and SUV-style off-roading in the background. In that regard, it's more like a Chevy Blazer than a Jeep Grand Cherokee or even a Honda Passport, but they're all competing for the same attention span.

2022 Ford Edge Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base turbocharged four-cylinder produces 250 horsepower and, despite its sluggish acceleration, should be sufficient for the majority of customers. the Edge ST, which gets a 335-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 and standard all-wheel drive, if you want an SUV that can keep up with a Volkswagen Golf GTI from zero to 60 mph—and quite a few other zippy cars as well. The Edge isn't as agile as the athletic Mazda CX-9—our benchmark for crossover handling—but it's still fun to drive and offers reassuring stability in corners. Its steering is nicely weighted, if not particularly communicative, and its ride is comfortable on rough roads.

What is the top speed of the Ford Edge?

The Ford Edge is quick enough with the base 250-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 (rated on 93-octane fuel; we're still not sure why Ford does this), which is distributed to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. With a 0-60 mph time of about eight seconds, it's adequate for daily driving and interstate cruising, and it's relatively unobtrusive as it streams out power.

The Ford Edge tracks smoothly down the highway and dampens out the road with ride tuning on the firmer side of the SUV spectrum, thanks to all-around independent suspension and electronic power steering. We'd skip the larger wheels and tyres on the options list because they degrade the crossover's handling. In its most basic configuration, it's comfortable and quiet, with precise steering; it can also tow up to 3,500 pounds.

If you opt for the Ford Edge ST, Ford includes a 335-hp 2.7-liter V-6 engine (also rated on 93 octane) and a 0-60 mph time of less than six seconds. With revised suspension and steering, as well as optional performance brakes, the ST can confidently handle any winding road. When equipped with 20- or 21-inch wheels, the Edge ST stiffens like a Doberman when the doorbell rings.
